Summer jobs are an American pastime for students of all ages. School has let out and you want/need to earn some extra cash before it’s time to head back to the classroom. Maybe you want to travel during your time off but cant really afford it? The great thing about living in the age we do, is the amount of jobs available in the summer, and some year round, that are perfect for students.
Landscaping/ Yard work
Yard work has been one of the top summer jobs when school lets out for the year. Landscaping work like spreading mulch, weeding flower beds, keeping the grass mowed, and general yard clean up. For the most part you can complete these jobs with relative small upfront investment or use the tools provided by your employer. The work allows you to be outside and enjoy the summer weather and being manual labor, keeps you in shape.
Lifeguard
Most hotels, parks, beaches, etc. hire lifeguards to work during the peak summer season. Once you have the required training to be a lifeguard you can work outside and enjoy being by the pool or along the beach all summer long. Most of the time you will need to meet the physical requirements of your place of employment and take some first aid training. While that may not sound like the funnest things to do, the training is always a good thing to learn anyway, whether you plan to continue as a life guard or not.
Coach or Umpire
The spring and summer brings forth little league and other youth sports. Many locations are in need of team coaches, umpires, and referees. For a college student out of school this provides ample opportunity to work and play at the same time. Young kids need responsible role models to look up to and teach them. If you have an interest in sports, this is the perfect match for you.
Tourism Based Job
Every location that attracts tourists during the summer season has businesses that need to hire extra employees during that time. Want to spend the summer along the beach? Find a position with one of these businesses that’s hiring and earn some money the same time you get to stay close to the beach. You can also find jobs on cruise ships and sail to various destinations throughout the summer, giving you the oppurtunity to visit locations you might otherwise not have the money yourself to see.
State and Federal Parks
Check with your local parks and parks in your state. Most hire extra workers in the summer to accommodate the extra foot traffic they get. Same for federal parks and monuments. Most hire extra employees for times that fit perfect for college students. Jobs can range from working inside an office to outside along a beach or mountainside helping with research projects that need an extra hand. The great thing about these jobs is they look good on a resume and some may even allow you to earn college credit at the same time.
Working Odd Jobs
Odd jobs can be considered a mix of everything above plus many others combined that make you money. Websites such as TaskRabbit and Craigslist can help you find jobs in your area that people are requesting help with.
